After 174 Years of existing as a Cricket Club, we started Ladies training this year, 6pm on a Thursday and on the 30th June we had our first ladies match , the Holmfirth Hurricanes, Established 2022 , their match ironically was called a draw due to the threat of Thunder and Lightening but everyone enjoyed the match.
The Established date of our club was never clear but I spent the winter researching the archives and found two matches vs Holme, one in the shadow of Holme Moss in 1848 , with help form Holmfirth History group this year makes sense as one user reported that in 1850 we had our 3rd end of season celebration. A big party next year for our 175th anniversary, we are reaching out to any “famous” ex players so please contact the club if you are one.
On the pitch after the success of our U17s winning their league in 2021 and the Second team being promoted has switched to our younger age groups this term, our U11s are unbeaten and the U13s top of the League with 2/3rd of the season completed.
Two nice stories from our first team, in a match vs Emley , the Emly Wicket Keeper had concussion so our Captain Seb Allen took to the field on the boundary , and it had to happen,. Our second team Captain playing up for the day smashed it to him for hm to take a superb catch on the boundary, so our first team captain caught out our second team captain, you cannot get more sporting than that, it was a great catch too! Seb is on course to take the most victims in our league but I don’t think that one will count! We also had Alex Ridler last weekend , who normally scores the first team , ended up playing as a player called in sick, he scored 2 runs, the youngest run scorer for our first team at 13 years and 214 days since electronic scoring began.
We would also like to thank the Community Group after an arson attack on the club , a bin was set on fire , underneath our wooden balcony, Will and Tom dragged the bin into space thankfully , the community group identified the people who did it , although we are yet to hear anything from the authorities. We did have an apology from a parent.
The Pub knockout that runs along side the duck race was a great success , won by The Nook, the club is very grateful for everyone’s participation and popping a few quid behind the bar, the funds are well received, our next fund raiser is to buy a new fence by the river, 140m in length, all donations welcomed.
