An illustrated presentation by David Wyles
Tuesday 15 October 2024 at 7.30pm.
BROCKHOLES VILLAGE HALL
David Wyles, Chairman of Huddersfield Civic Society, will reveal the development of Huddersfield town centre over 250 years and consider future proposals for its revival.
In the late 18th century Huddersfield was described as ‘a miserable village’. The growth of the textile industry, the development of the canal and railway and influence of the Ramsden family, resulted in a town described as ‘the handsomest by far of all the factory towns.’ As the town continued to expand, offices, shops and cultural facilities helped create a vibrant, architecturally impressive centre. More recently, industrial decline, changes in shopping habits and growing dependency on cars have all resulted in change and decline.
David will illustrate the changing fortunes of the town and outline recent initiatives, designed to inject new life and investment into the town.
