Caretaker/Facilities Assistant – The Civic, Holmfirth

The Role

This is an interesting and flexible role for the right person to help support the work of Holmfirth Civic Hall Community Trust. The Civic, Holmfirth is a Grade II listed building in the heart of Holmfirth, owned by Holme Valley Parish Council and run and managed on a daily basis by Holmfirth Civic Hall Community Trust.

The role involves ensuring the building is operating efficiently and safely on a day to day basis, including opening and locking up, internal and external maintenance and security.  It also involves setting up for and clearing away after a wide range of events taking place at The Civic.

This is a flexible part time role of approx. 8 to 15 hours per week worked flexibly across weekdays and at the weekend.

Key Responsibilities

Security & Building Operations

  • Opening/locking the building to meet routine and non-routine requirements of hirers.
  • Carry out security procedures for the building ie opening and locking doors, deactivating/activating alarms, weekly fire alarms tests.
  • Operating the boiler system, so adequate temperatures are maintained for all users.
  • Ensuring that reasonable access is possible in times of inclement weather, eg clearing snow, gritting paths/ramps etc.
  • To attend emergency call outs as required.
  • Identifying and undertaking general repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Carrying out ‘first aid’ emergency repairs to ensure building security as the need arises.
  • Identify and collate defects and repairs that require attention and report accordingly.
  • Grounds and garden maintenance activities, eg keeping paths and ramp clear, litter picking, weeding etc.

Facilities Support for Events

  • Carrying out a variety of tasks related to setting up and clearing down for events, for example – putting out tables and/or chairs, setting up and stocking bars in various rooms across the building.
  • Putting up and/or taking down badminton nets.

Customer Care

  • Be a positive member of the staff, maintaining good relationships with hall users and other members of the community.
  • Ensure all visitors to the hall are dealt with in a prompt, courteous and efficient manner.
  • Interacting with hall users to understand their requirements and helping to ensure they are met in the best possible way.
  • New and potential customers are given access and escorted on any viewing visits.
  • Responsible for the security of the site including challenging unexpected people on site to ensure no risks to hirers.

Waste/Pest Control

  • Maintain unimpeded access for refuse collectors to enable bins and containers to be emptied without hazard.
  • Ensure all bins are emptied as and when required.
  • Ensure the building entrance is tidy and litter free.
  • Take glass to bottle bank on a regular basis.
  • Identify and respond to any evidence of vermin/pests.

Cleaning Work

  • Whilst The Civic has a cleaner who attends on a daily basis, there will be occasions where cleaning support is required.
  • Undertake occasional non-routine cleaning tasks as and when required.
  • Ensure ground drain gullies, toilets and sink outlets remain clean and free flowing.
