THE FRENCH CONNECTION (1971)

Come and see one of the most influential neo-noir crime thrillers of all time, William Friedkin’s explosive THE FRENCH CONNECTION, showing with the original theatrical mono audio.
“Hey, come on, come on. Say it. Let me hear you say it. Come on. Have you ever been to Poughkeepsie? You’ve been in Poughkeepsie, haven’t you? I want to hear it! Come on!”
Two tough New York City cops, Popeye Doyle and his partner Buddy Russo uncover a large drug smuggling operation bringing in heroin from France. Popeye’ Doyle is a short-tempered alcoholic bigot who is nevertheless a hard-working and dedicated police officer, and his criminal nemesis is a suave and urbane gentleman who is nevertheless a criminal and one of the largest drug suppliers of pure heroin to North America. Doyle and his partner set out to bring the criminal enterprise to justice.
Featuring incredible performances and gritty documentary style filmmaking from Friedkin, The French Connection captures a New York that no longer exists. It also features the most memorable and dangerous car chase sequence ever shot on film.
Earning eight oscar nominations and winning five for Best Picture, Best Actor (Hackman), Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Adapted Screenplay, the French Connection has to be seen on the biggest screen possible, it is a film like no other, made by a master of his craft.
Often considered one of the greatest films ever made, The French Connection appeared in the American Film Institute’s list of the best American films in 1998 and again in 2007. In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

The aim of the Amity Cinema is to bring people together to appreciate great films on a big screen, as they should be seen. Please do not treat the Amity like a traditional cinema, don’t be concerned about being 100% silent, don’t be worried about getting up to go to the bar or use the bathroom at any point, you’re sat in a bar that serves excellent beer just behind your seats, feel absolutely free to quote along, cheer, cry, despair, warn the characters about what’s behind them etc. You also don’t need to leave the room as soon as the credits roll, you are welcome to stay and have a few drinks and discuss the film or just continue enjoying your evening.
I want to bring people together to have a good time. I want us to have our very own cinema in the heart of Holmfirth.
