St. Davids Church, Woodhead Road, Holmbridge, Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, HD9 2NQ
Stunning 20th century embroidery, a modern stained glass window, modern art and surprising carved symbols!
Interpretative self guided trail in church. Mini trail for kids.
Village Scarecrow Festival, Saturday Cafe. Sunday afternoon cricket tournament
St David’s Church welcomes you to explore the glories of its craftsmanship as part of its Community Weekend.
Our Victorian church has some hidden surprises – some of which the current vicar and congregation knew nothing about until researching old documents!
Come and have a close up view of the outstanding embroidery by Mrs Sheila Streek, vicar’s wife in Holmbridge from 1951-1976, and needlewoman in our current congregation, Anne MacDonald.
View the Millennium stained glass window by local craftsman Adam Goodyear, based on ideas from the children of the villages and go right up to the altar and look for the hidden symbols designed and carved by master carver from Northowram, Mr H P Jackson.
Marion Robinson uses symbolism and imagery to wonderful effect in her glorious double sided Madonna and Child painting.
There are also some interesting collaborative banners telling our local ‘stories’ using a variety of techniques.
Display about our Conacher Organ with its beautifully painted organ pipes, in need of restoration.
Church cafe open on Saturday. Sunday Community Celebration Service 10am and afternoon cricket tournament.
We’d love you also to find out more about how the church serves the community at our end of the Upper Holme Valley.
