Ceramic Figure Sculpture (Short Course) with Jamie Frost

27th September - 10:00 am - 7:00 pm

Immerse yourself in the lifestyle of a figurative sculptor. In this course we will spend four days working from a live model to study the art of clay figure sculpture. At the end of the course you will have produced a half life-size sculpture from quality handbuilding clay and prepared it for firing into ceramic. When fired your sculpture will be frostproof, suitable for outdoor display.

“Very quickly I became entirely immersed and was amazed at what an enthralling experience it turned out to be. Learning was intense but Jamie pitched instructions at just the right level, keeping our nerves steady while holding us to task. It was a wonderful chance to become totally absorbed in something away from everyday earthly struggles, among warm and good company. In addition, excellent food was provided to keep us buoyant and refreshed. Overall a great experience with lasting consequences.”

Initially modelling directly and freely with the clay on a small scale, the process becomes more refined as we make armatures for a larger sculpture. Measurement becomes useful and there are more techniques to consider. In time you’ll realise that a figure is not merely a likeness, there’s some of yourself in there too. Whether it’s how you handle the clay or where you choose to elaborate and edit, it’s an astonishing thing to discover.

As we continue over the weekend I’ll introduce you to the work of many other sculptors and talk you through the different approaches taken in my own work.

This masterclass includes a choice of lunches, refreshments and all tools and materials. The fee is £495 per participant.
